I used to open my Bible and just… read.

I didn’t really know what I was looking for. Sometimes I’d land on a verse and think, That’s nice, and close it again — still confused, still heavy, still wondering if God was really speaking to me.

But I remember the day everything changed.

It was a rainy morning, and I was sitting at my kitchen table. I had just gone through a difficult season — anxiety, burnout, feeling spiritually numb. My heart was starving for something real.

I opened to Psalm 34:18:
“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.”

That’s when I decided to try something different.

Instead of just reading the verse, I started to break it down — word by word. I circled “near” and looked up the meaning. I wrote out what “brokenhearted” meant in Hebrew. I asked, “How does this apply to me? Is this a lesson, is there a warning?”

And suddenly, it wasn’t just a verse.

It was a love letter written to me.

The Lord — the Almighty, All-Knowing God — was telling me He was near. He saw my crushed spirit. He wasn’t far away or disappointed in me. He was close. With me. For me.

I wept right there at the table.

That was the day I fell in love with the Word of God.

Not because I became a Bible scholar…
But because I finally let Him speak to me through His words.
